“Put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with Him is full redemption.” Psalm 130: 7
One of our priest stated in a recent homily: "Hope is in short supply today." I kept pondering his words in my heart. I thought, he is absolutely right. There are so many people living lives of slow desperation day in and day out. How do we begin to
show others the hope that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help
of the grace of the Holy Spirit. The virtue of hope responds to the aspiration to happiness which God has placed in the heart of every man; it takes up the hopes that inspire men's activities and purifies them
so as to order them to the Kingdom of heaven; it keeps man from discouragement; it sustains him during times of abandonment; it opens up his heart in expectation of eternal beatitude. Buoyed up by hope, he is preserved from selfishness and led to the happiness
that flows from charity."
If we place our hope
in God each day, we can safeguard ourselves from discouragement. The virtue of hope helps us to persevere during times of sorrow and difficulties. When we give into discouragement we can proclaim: "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,
for he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23
Lets face it, life can be challenging at times and I do get discouraged. I may wonder where is God in the midst of these tribulations that I am going through? God has placed in my heart this eternal hope in Him.
I know God is closer than my breathing. I just need to stop and take in a deep breath and whisper, “Jesus I trust in you. Jesus I hope in you. Jesus you are all that I need. You are all that I want. You are worthy of my praise.”
Let us help others by living lives filled with hope that comes from God alone.
“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him,
my Savior and my God.” Psalm 43: 5
